Introduction:

Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) are two surgical specialties dealing with female reproductive organs, and as such are often combined to form a single medical specialty and postgraduate training program. This combined training prepares the practicing OBGYN to be adept at the surgical management of the entire scope of clinical pathology involving female reproductive organs, and to provide care to both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

 The Department of obstetrics & Gynaecology was established at Madina Teaching Hospital in 2006 by founder head of department Prof Dr Saadia khan. Later on the administrative responsibilities were carried out by Prof Dr Mubashra Naz alongside her substantive academic/clinical duties.

OBGYN unit offers wide range of academic programs and clinical services. The academic programs cater to undergraduate medical students, interns, FCPS, MCPS residents, fellows. In addition to training of medical students, department is dedicated to impart quality teaching/training to paramedical & nursing students. The dept. has gained accreditation by various health care authorities including Pakistan Medical Commission, University of Health Sciences, College of Physicians and surgeons Pakistan, Royal College of Obstetricians and gynaecology and Pakistan school of nursing and midwifery.

The curriculum is designed to meet the challenges of modern obstetrical and gynaecological care as well as to decrease the devastatingly high maternal mortality rate in Pakistan. The students are taught modern concepts of medical education using live demonstrations in clinical practice and skill labs.

Services offered:

The department is a dedicated unit that is destined to improve maternal health. The department  is  primarily  divided  into outpatient clinics ,indoor obstetrics  and  gynaecology wards and emergency  department comprising  labour rooms .There is  huge  diversity  of  patients in the unit as we are  the leading teaching hospital in  the  city offering  state  of  the  art evidence based  services in  the locality . The department is a major referral center for the obstetrical and gynaeclogical patients.

The department offers a broad range of inpatient and  outpatient  services for  women including high risk obstetrical care ,managing advance obstetric trauma and gynecological emergencies, routine antenatal care, reproductive endocrinology ,comprehensive diagnostic and treatment  of various gynecological  disorders .With the  provision of  minimally invasive  surgery and advanced radiological facilities ,the department  has emerged  as  one  of  the  leading  tertiary care centers in  the city.

Teaching activities

• Conducting class  lectures 6  lectures per week  for  final and  4th  years
• Daily   ward clinical classes  and  presentations  for two  to  three hours
• Resident duties  of  the  final  year for  15  to  20  days  for  at  least 12  hours
• OSPE  Training  every week for  two  to  three  hours
• Theater activities for  students……observing major and minor surgical procedures

ABU-UMARA MEDICAL & DENTAL COLLEGE/ ALI FATIMA HOSPITAL:             

The department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology started working with the opening of the tertiary care hospital and is extending high quality services to the patients. It has established its fame as one of the best centers in vicinity, serving all kinds of patients. We provide comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynaecology services in the department with one to one care and monitoring. We have faculty as per PMDC requirement. Post graduate trainees feel proud to come to our department with high success rate, comprehensive indoor patient care and state of art operation theatre, where they learn to rise and shine.

Labour ward:

In our tertiary care hospital Obstetrics and Gynae department is well equipped special unit designed to cater a broad spectrum of women health medicine offering both routine and advance care. The department typically includes variety of dedicated facilities and services to ensure comprehensive care for patients from all walks of life. There are state of art rooms equipped with modern monitoring system, birthing beds and neonatal resuscitation unit, designed to provide safe and comfortable environment for child birth in high risk cases. These suits are connected to Operation Theatre especially for emergency caesarean section and other obstetric surgeries ensuring that critical care can be provided immediately when needed.

NICU:

The NICU is integral part of obstetrics and gynae department providing specialized care for critically ill and newborn babies, equipped with advanced ventilators, monitoring units, staff and nurses trained in neonatal care to provide co- ordinated care to mother and the baby.

Gynaecological Procedures:

The department is fully equipped to perform all kinds of surgeries ranging from minimally invasive surgeries to complex gynaecological procedures. Facilities of Laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, colposcopy and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are also available. Our theatres are also supported by specialized recovery units for post op care.

Outpatient Facility:

Our OPD provides all kinds of routine obstetrical care, including Pre-natal, Antenatal, post natal checkups, along with family planning and concerns related to all other kinds of Obstetrical and Gynaecological related issues. These clinics are based on the idea of multidisciplinary approach, working in close collaboration with all other departments.

Education and training:

Post-graduate residents are provided with hands on training on Obstetrics and Gynae patients including laparoscopic procedures. Both undergraduates and postgraduate students are trained by highly skilled professionals in the department.

Research and Development:

We have an active Research Unit, conducting different research studies with our main focus on improving maternal and neonatal health.

Our department, led by Dr. Samina Khurshid Associate Professor (MBBS, FCPS, CHPE) is a dynamic unit with specialized services available towards management of high risk pregnancies, infertility, advanced oncologic surgeries, minimal invasive services including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy and complicated referred gynaecological cases.

The faculty members have been assigned administrative jobs in the scheduled manner. We have regular teaching sessions and rounds in which detailed report about patients and administrative problems are presented by on call doctors in presence of all the residents and the consultant staff. These facilities and services collectively ensure that our hospital obstetric and Gynae department provide comprehensive cutting edge care to women at all stages of life from routine care to management of complex Obstetrics and Gynae conditions.
